The Best Places to Cool Off During an Alabama Summer
The Best Places to Cool Off During an Alabama Summer!ย
Written By Emma Goggans
There are two kinds of people during an Alabama summer: those hiding indoors with the air conditioning… and those finding the nearest swimming hole.
Luckily, DeKalb County is full of places where you can beat the heat while enjoying some of North Alabama’s most beautiful scenery. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly place to splash, a hidden swimming hole, or an adventurous hike that ends with a refreshing dip, we’ve got you covered.
Grab your towel, pack a picnic, and dive into some of our favorite places to cool off this summer.
Hidden Swimming Holes
Looking for a refreshing escape? These natural swimming spots are worth the adventure.
Tucked below Little River Falls, the Hippie Hole is one of DeKalb County’s most iconic summertime destinations. A ยพ-mile trail winds through the woods before leading to the emerald-green pool at the base of Little Falls. Along the way, you’ll find rocky ledges perfect for sunbathing, shallow areas for wading, and secluded pools farther upstream if you’re looking for a quieter spot. For the adventurous, cliff jumping has made this swimming hole famousโbut always use caution, as underwater conditions can change and not every jumping area is free of rocks.
Eberhart Point
If you’re willing to work for your swim, Eberhart Point delivers. The hike into the canyon rewards visitors with incredible overlooks before ending at a sandy beach along the Little River. The bottom of the canyon is just as breathtaking as the overlooks and incredibly serene. Surrounded by towering canyon walls and massive boulders, it’s the perfect place to cool off after the trek. Just remember you’ll have to hike back out, but if you are up for it, this spot is well worth the descent!
Blue Hole
Just upstream from Little River Falls, Blue Hole is one of the easiest swimming areas to access. Calm, shallow water and a short walk from the parking area make it a favorite for families and younger swimmers. Because it’s such a popular summertime destination, arriving early is the best way to secure a parking spot before the crowds roll in.
Waterfalls Worth Wading In
Some waterfalls are meant to be admired. These let you cool off while you’re there.
At 104 feet, DeSoto Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in Alabamaโand it’s just as fun to experience as it is to photograph. Adventurous visitors can hike to the base of the falls for an unforgettable view and a refreshing swim beneath the cascading water. Looking for something a little more relaxing? The picnic area features a sandy swimming beach that’s perfect for families, complete with calm water and plenty of room to spread out for the day.
High Falls Park is one of North Alabama’s hidden treasures. The stunning 35-foot waterfall stretches nearly 300 feet across Town Creek at times, creating an impressive backdrop for a summer adventure. The calm water above the falls is perfect for cooling off, while the pedestrian bridge offers incredible views of both the waterfall and the historic natural rock bridge below. It’s easy to spend an entire afternoon soaking in both the scenery and the water.

Sometimes the best swimming spots are the ones not everyone knows about.
