Some say that newer is always better, but it’s safe to say those folks haven’t been antiquing in DeKalb County, Alabama. Known for its stunning natural beauty, including Lookout Mountain and her abundant waterfalls and friendly locals, this idyllic community of small towns is also home to some of the best antiquing in the South.
Based in quaint Fyffe, Alabama, Vintage Pickin’ is making waves across the region for their regular barn sales, where more than 45 quality vendors come together at Instagram-worthy White Oaks Farm to show off their collections of antiques, vintage pieces, and handmade goods. Think Etsy, but with sunshine, friendly faces and lots of local charm. The 2019 spring barn sale is just around the corner—Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4—so snag your tickets and plan your trip soon!
If you can’t make it to this spring’s Vintage Pickin’—or you just want to stretch your shopping spree—don’t worry: Fyffe has plenty to offer shoppers any time of the year. Take Two Peas in a Pod, for example. This vintage boutique has everything from home decor to new and lightly worn clothes for kids and adults alike, as well as plenty of a variety of antiques. Another top pick is The Cupboard, where vendor booths are stocked with clothing, gifts, furniture, and—you guessed it—plenty of antiques. And if you need a second wind, The Cupboard’s got you covered with a selection of delectable fresh baked desserts.
The abundant antiquing opportunities don’t stop in Fyffe! Throughout DeKalb County, there’s a passion for preservation. A great way to experience that is to hit the road during the annual US 11 Antique Alley and Yard Sale on the weekend after Mother’s Day, or May 16-19, 2019. This unique event combines two of the area’s top attractions—exploration and antiquing—by its very nature: vendors line up along a mind-boggling 502 miles of US Highway 11. The route, which runs from Meridian, Mississippi, to Bristol, Virginia, runs right through DeKalb County, giving visitors a chance to shop local vendors and antiquers while also appreciating the beautiful landscape.
With so many booths to choose from, you’re sure to find everything on your list, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop shopping! Several shops are nestled right along the route of the US 11 Antique Alley and Yard Sale. The shabby chic farmhouse decor and reclaimed furniture at Fort Payne’s Farmhouse Finds is the stuff of an HGTV lover’s dreams, and Myrtle Jane’s, another Fort Payne fave, is worth a stop for its local history alone. This marketplace with over 40 booths is housed in the family’s old concrete plant and takes its name from the plant’s co-owner, Myrtle Jane Haas, who operated the plant until her retirement in the late 1970s. And true antique aficionados can’t miss the auctions at Dave’s Antiques in Hammondville. During these exciting events, buyers can bid on the cream of the crop from Dave’s already top-notch selection, including one-of-a-kind furniture, collectibles, and glass pieces.
