Are you longing for a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life? Look no further than DeKalb County in Northeast Alabama, where the scenic beauty of Lookout Mountain and charming small towns offer the perfect weekend getaway. Whether you’re an adventurer, nature lover, or someone seeking relaxation, Fort Payne, Mentone, and Sand Mountain will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a world of breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and Southern hospitality.
Day 1: Arriving in Fort Payne – Gateway to Adventure
Begin your weekend in Fort Payne, a historic town with a rich musical heritage as the birthplace of the iconic band Alabama. The town serves as the gateway to Lookout Mountain, offering a blend of outdoor adventure, culture, and history.
Start your day with breakfast & coffee at The Bakehouse or The Spot Coffee Shop (located in the heart of downtown Fort Payne), then immerse yourself in nature by heading to Little River Canyon National Preserve. Known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” this stunning 650’ gorge is the perfect place for hiking, picnicking, and taking in panoramic views from scenic overlooks. While in the park you will find Little River Falls (a beautiful waterfall with a 45 foot drop), as well as the Little River Canyon Center with a gift store and information station. You’ll be amazed by the canyon’s dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and the sparkling Little River carving through the canyon below. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider a kayaking trip down the river or exploring the many hiking trails that wind through the park.
After a morning of outdoor exploration, take a walk through Fort Payne’s historic downtown. Visit the Alabama Fan Club and Museum to learn more about the legendary country band, or browse unique local shops, like Boom Town Makers Market or Alice Circle, for handcrafted goods and souvenirs. For dinner, visit Little River Burgers & Brews, Maters Pizza & Pasta Emporium, or Vintage 1889 for some delicious food & live music.
As the evening sets in, check into a cozy cabin or bed and breakfast on Lookout Mountain for a peaceful night’s rest surrounded by nature.
Day 2: Exploring the Charm of Mentone
On your second day, take the scenic drive up Lookout Mountain to the enchanting town of Mentone. Known for its artistic flair and natural beauty, Mentone is a perfect spot for those who appreciate a slower pace and a sense of community.
Start with a leisurely breakfast at The Hatter Cafe, then explore Mentone’s many artisan shops and galleries. Take a stroll around the Mentone Arts Center, or stop by the Moon Lake Village, an artisan and craftsman village on the former campus of the historic Moon Lake School, where you can find everything from handcrafted treasures to unique jewelry. The artistic spirit of the town is palpable, and you’re sure to leave with something special.
Afterward, head to Desoto Falls, one of Alabama’s most stunning waterfalls. With its dramatic 104-foot drop, it’s a perfect spot for photos or a tranquil moment of reflection. You can take a short walk to various overlooks or venture farther with a hike to the base of the falls.
For lunch, pack a picnic and relax by the falls or dine at one of the local restaurants in Mentone. From the famous Wildflower Cafe, to newer establishments like Elevation Bistro, you are sure to find something delicious atop Lookout Mountain. Be sure to try some fresh, local fare with farm-to-table ingredients.
As the sun sets on your perfect day, stop and enjoy a tranquil evening at Mentone Brow Park, one of the few public places in town where you can witness the most beautiful Appalachian sunset.
Day 3: Discovering Sand Mountain
Before you leave DeKalb County, head over to Sand Mountain for your final day of exploration. Known for its agricultural heritage, Sand Mountain offers a more rural and tranquil side of Alabama.
Start your day by visiting one of the many farms or markets in the area. There are several “u-pick” farms where visitors can pick fresh fruits and vegetables, or flowers: Town Creek Field + Farm in Valley Head, Over Easy Acres in Geraldine, plus Breezy Acres Flower Farm & Bee Gum Creek Farm located in Henagar. All of these locations offer seasonal activities, so be sure to check each farm’s website or Facebook page for information. Local farms allow visitors to experience the charm of Alabama’s countryside firsthand.
There are also several other great outdoor stops atop Sand Mountain. There’s High Falls Park, a beautiful waterfall with an extraordinary natural bridge. There is also Buck’s Pocket State Park, a spectacular natural canyon pocket of the Appalachian Mountain foothills. The park features hiking trails, a campground, and an ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) trail.
Before heading home, treat yourself to a hearty Southern meal at a local diner. Enjoy traditional dishes like fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread, which are staples of the region.
DeKalb County and Lookout Mountain offer an incredible variety of activities for a weekend escape. Whether you’re soaking in the natural beauty of Little River Canyon, exploring the charming streets of Mentone, adventuring in downtown Fort Payne, or experiencing the rural charm of Sand Mountain, this corner of Alabama promises a rejuvenating experience away from the stresses of city life.
