Tour historic and beautiful churches on the renowned Hallelujah Trail in DeKalb County.

The DeKalb County Hallelujah Trail will help you explore churches in the county that have rich culture and spiritual heritage. The trail consists of 20 churches that are at least 100 years old, stand on their original sites, still hold services, and are accessible to the public. We look forward to seeing you on the trail.

First Presbyterian Church of Fort Payne
300 Grand Ave. N, Fort Payne, AL 35967

Built in 1875, this is the oldest church in Fort Payne and is still in use.

Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church
2910 Gault Ave. N., Fort Payne, AL 35967

Established in 1959 with approximately 17 Catholic residents. This is the only Catholic Church in DeKalb County. The current church seating 500 was dedicated in 2002 and is built on the same property as the former church built in 1963.

Fort Payne First Methodist Church
206 Grand Ave. N, Fort Payne, AL 35967

The original church, organized in 1885, was built the following year near the site of the present church. The current church built at the same location in 1921 was considered one of the most beautiful in Alabama in the 1920’s. The church has a one of a kind stained glass donated by a group of confederate soldiers in 1925. The inscription reads “W.N. Estes Camp, United Confederate Veterans.”

First Baptist Church
106 Grand Ave. N, Fort Payne, AL 35967

Organized in 1885, the church thrived and grew in several locations. In 1920 the church built a new sanctuary in its current location. In 1941 they added an educational building. In 1959 both were demolished and the present sanctuary was completed in 1960 with an educational facility added in 1966. Since then renovations have been completed and in 2002 the church installed a Rieger-Kloss pipe organ.

Valley Head Methodist Church
146 Church St., Valley,Head, AL 35989

Founded sometime between the 1830’s and 1852 a small wood church was built at a site near William Holleman’s farm located near the present site of the Lower Sulfur Springs Cemetery in the northern part of Fort Payne. The Methodist Church was named Holleman’s Chapel. Holleman formerly was a Methodist circuit rider. In 1871 Holleman’s Chapel moved to Valley Head and became the Valley Head United Methodist Church located in a structure about a quarter mile from its current location. On August 22, 1904 the church building was physically moved from it’s former to its current location.

White Hall Methodist Church

Built as a Presbyterian church in 1888, this church was purchased by the Methodists in 1920. The church was named after John and Clara Keith White, who donated the land for the cemetery in 1835.

Little River Baptist Church
1432 County Road 648, Mentone, AL, 35984

First known as the Baptist Church of Christ established in 1850. In 1861 land was provided at the church’s current location and a church was built and named Little River Church. A fire destroyed the original structure and in 1894 the current church was built. Legendary Granny Dollar is buried in the cemetery at this location.

Mentone Methodist Church
415 Cutler Ave., Mentone, AL 35984

Roscoe & Ethel Brown are still honored today by the descendants of their church family for supporting the construction of this church. It was built just before the turn of the twentieth century. Known for its high steeple cross, the church has survived time and a fire to hold services each Sunday.

St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church
21145 Scenic Hwy, Mentone, AL 35984

An 1870 Log Cabin still stands in the middle of this Church that was built by its members years ago. It houses a stained glass window that was hand painted and fired in France more than 100 years ago, hand rubbed and stained long dark pews, and large heavy wooden front doors from the 19th century.

Sallie Howard Memorial Baptist Church
14 County Road 617, Mentone, AL 35984

Built around a huge rock boulder by Colonel Milford W. Howard in 1937 in memory of his late wife, Sallie. Above the pulpit are words from Sallie’s last letter printed upon a huge beam reading “God Has All Ways Been As Good To Me As I Would Let Him Be”. The church is always left open to worshipers & visitors and still holds weekly services.

New Oregon Methodist Church
1204 New Oregon Dr. NE, Fort Payne, AL 35967

Oregon Methodist Church was established in 1877 about 1 mile north of its current location. The current structure was built in 1888 and in 1992 a new sanctuary was added. Originally services were conducted by a circuit rider once a month. In 1951 the church became part of the Fort Payne circuit and services were held weekly. In 1976 New Oregon went out on it’s own to become a full time church.

Walker’s Chapel Methodist Church
796 County Rd. 115, Fort Payne, AL 35967

Established in 1842, the current building was constructed by church members in 1900. Walkers Chapel was named after Peter J Walker. Walker was a pioneer Methodist minister around Dogtown in the 1840’s and 50’s. The original church began in a log cabin without any glass for the windows. The same log structure was used as one of the early schools on Lookout Mountain.

Collinsville Presbyterian Church
79 S. Valley Ave., Collinsville, AL 35961

The Presbyterian church of Collinsville was established in 1904 at a church located at the foot of Cochran Hill. The present location was built in 1908 and in 1976 this beautiful church with Gothic lines was added to the Alabama Registry of Historic Places. The building has remained mostly unchanged. The church has five memorial stained glass windows.

Collinsville Baptist Church
4276 AL Hwy 68, Collinsville, AL 35961

Established in 1837 the Collinsville Baptist Church is the oldest Baptist Church in DeKalb County. The current church was built on property donated by Mr. Alfred Collins in 1928 and dedicated on April 7, 1929. In 1987 the church celebrated its 150th birthday. On Sunday October 8, 1996 a historic marker was unveiled and dedicated on the church lawn to denote the property as the location of an Indian Mound, an Inn and a Church.

Skirum Baptist Church
2074 County Road 46, Crossville, AL 35962

Celebrated it’s Centennial birthday in July 2008. The current church was built in 1947 and replaces the original whose remnants can still be seen next to the current Skirum Methodist Church. Billy Smothers has been pastor since 1963.

Fyffe Church of God
778 Main Street, Fyffe, AL 35971

Built and organized in April of 1953. After many years of remodeling & expanding, the original structure is still encompassed in this Church today.

Robertson Chapel Methodist Church
812 George Wallace Dr. E, Rainsville, AL 35986

Church established in 1901. Current church built in 1950 of beautiful Tennessee Flagstone. A fellowship hall was added in 2001 and in 2004 a steeple was added to the church. The fellowship hall has stained glass windows in honor and memory of members and friends of the church.

Chavies Baptist Church
1113 County Road 555, Rainsville, AL 35986

Founded in 1903 in an old mill house on the banks of Town Creek. The current church is the second one on land donated to the church in 1908. The current church structure was erected in 1935 and replaced the former which was severely damaged in a storm. The church has had many improvements over the years including a two story fellowship hall built in 1981.

Trinity Methodist Church
1951 Carlyle Rd., Rainsville, AL 35986

Founded in the early 1880’s. First log church was completed in 1883 and was used for a church and school. The building burned several years later and was coined the “burnt church” a name still used by some today. Several other buildings preceded the current brick structure built in 1948 with additions in 1953.

Liberty Baptist Church
1500 Liberty Road, Henagar, AL 35978

Established in 1893 and home of Sacred Harp singing through all this time. Beautiful gospel Sacred Harp singing actually has no Harp or any other instrument…just beautiful harmonious vocals. The original Sacred Harp tune book was published in 1844.
