Exploring DeKalb County is even better when your four-legged companion can come along. Whether you’re hiking scenic trails, strolling through downtown, relaxing at a local park, or stopping for a well-earned treat, there are plenty of pet-friendly spots that make it easy to include your pup in the adventure.
If you’re looking for places where tails can wag and memories can be made, here’s where to start.
Hit the Trails Together
If your pup loves fresh air and new smells, you’re in the right place. DeKalb County is packed with scenic trails and outdoor spaces where you and your pet can stretch your legs and soak up the views.
DeSoto State Park
Spanning nearly 3,500 acres of forests, rivers, and mountain terrain, DeSoto State Park is an outdoor lover’s dream. With more than 25 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, there’s plenty of room to explore scenic overlooks, waterfalls, and wooded paths alongside your pup. From the iconic Talmadge Butler Boardwalk Trail to cascading falls, it’s easy to spend the day immersed in nature with your furry friend by your side.
Little River Canyon National Preserve
The boardwalk at Little River Falls offers an easy, pet-friendly walk and stunning views of the beautiful 45-foot waterfall at the mouth of the canyon. Feeling a little more adventurous? Hike down to the “Hippie Hole”—a popular swimming spot that’s perfect for cooling off with your pup during the warmer months.
B.A.R.K Ranger Program
Did you know your pup can earn an official title while visiting Little River Canyon? Through the National Park Service’s B.A.R.K. Ranger program, your four-legged adventurer can become a certified steward of the park.
The program encourages responsible recreation by following the B.A.R.K. principles:
Bag your waste.
Always wear a leash.
Respect wildlife.
Know where you can go.
To participate, simply pick up a B.A.R.K. Ranger handout at the Little River Canyon Center, complete the checklist, and return it with a photo of you and your dog demonstrating the B.A.R.K. rules. Once approved (with your dog present, of course!), your pup will receive an official Little River Canyon dog tag — available in sizes for both big and small dogs.
High Falls Park
At High Falls Park you can marvel at the scenic vistas and the majestic 35-foot waterfall formed by Town Creek, stretching nearly 300 feet across at times. A pedestrian bridge above the falls offers picture-perfect views of the gorge, while the natural rock bridge below—carved by centuries of flowing water—adds a unique historic touch. It’s a peaceful, scenic stop where natural beauty and history meet, perfect for exploring with your pup.
Buck’s Pocket State Park
For those who like their adventures a little more rugged, Buck’s Pocket State Park offers breathtaking overlooks and peaceful trails where you and your pet can truly unplug. Tucked into a natural pocket of the Appalachian Mountain foothills, Buck’s Pocket continues to grow as a scenic, family-friendly outdoor destination.
