BBQ Done Up Right in DeKalb County

If you’ve been on social media much lately, you’ve likely seen the debate about the relative merits of Brooklyn’s barbeque. Bless their hearts.

Down here in Alabama, we understand the sacred combination of fire, smoke, and meat. Whether it’s traditional pork shoulder, a rack of ribs or half a chicken, the barbeque tradition in DeKalb County is strong. There are more than 10 barbeque joints in the county, so you could easily spend a long weekend eating nothing but barbeque. (Sounds kinda perfect, doesn’t it?)

What began as way to add flavor and tenderness to tougher, cheaper cuts of meat has become a source of regional and local pride, right down to the distinct favors of each individual pit. From the titular ribs at the Rib Shak in Fort Payne to 50 Taters in Rainsville – serving “taters” nearly as big as your head – you’ll find each local pit offers its own special flavor and atmosphere.

Barry’s BBQ in Fyffe features a dinner buffet from Thursday through Saturday, offering perennial Southern favorites like greens and cobbler… plus BBQ, of course. Bama Boys BBQ in Henagar offers barbeque almost any way you can eat it: on a rib, on a bun, on a baked potato, even on a salad.
