Manitou Cave

Manitou Cave is a cave in Alabama, near the town of Fort Payne, in the side of Lookout Mountain. The cave was reputedly named for “the great spirit” by the Cherokee in the 18th century. During the Civil War, the cave was a source of saltpeter for the Confederate Army.

For the preservation of the historic records and fragile ecosystem, group tours, retreats and events are currently limited and by appointment only.  To request a visit, please submit a form including any details surrounding your visit such as preferred dates and the purpose for your visit.  Alternatively, you may email us at manitoucaveofal@gmail.com with your request details.  A minimum donation of $10 per person is requested to support upkeep of the cave and surroundings.
